I think I’ve pretty much decided to pursue a linguistics major, with a minor in either history or anthropology. I find it interesting and fun (except morphology because it seems to hate me) and though my mother will probably dislike this decision, it is mine and mine alone. HA. Speaking of linguistics, we watched an (older) video in class this morning about the evolution of the English...

adlanth: adenydd: “Lúthien” by Alan Lee. I once saw Alan Lee at a book signing and asked him to draw whatever he liked best in The Silmarillion. So he drew me a sketch of Lúthien. Oh, that’s pretty neat! You’re lucky — Alan Lee is one of the best modern professional illustrators, in my opinion, and I would have loved to meet him. If you happen to still have that sketch,...

I got an A on my semantics/pragmatics and sociolinguistics exams. I like semantics and pragmatics, which is lovely because they seem to like me back. Received a B on the phonetics test — I honestly thought I did better, but I’ll take what I can get. Morphology and syntax have not been as kind to me.

inspectorkaramazova: i recently heard the lea michele version of “on my own” on glee. i quit after thirty seconds. Why all the Lea Michele hate? I mean, I’m not a huge fan of her, but she has a decent voice. I think it mostly comes down to two things: 1.) Glee backlash and 2.) dislike of her performance style. Glee has been one of the most popular television series in the past few years. If...

quickasaflash replied to your post: What does accio mean? I have noticed it’s used as… Have you read Harry Potter? No … I presume that would explain something? ETA: Okay, thanks for the responses. I also received a few in my inbox. xD

What does accio mean? I have noticed it’s used as a popular prefix for several usernames. It sounded vaguely Latin in origin, so I looked it up in the Latin dictionary, which told me it means “send for, summon (forth), fetch; invite”. Alright, so is this just the Latin word of choice these days … or am I missing something else here?
