a part of me thinks that fantine would have been prouder having éponine for a daughter than cosette.

OP, the point of Fantine and Cosette? I think you’re missing it. I think you’re missing the point of parenting in general. Fantine had unconditional love for Cosette. Because that’s what good parents do. She would never dare compare Cosette to Eponine, and if she did? She’d be happy that Cosette found happiness, and she’d pity Eponine, and really, that’s about it. She’d NEVER for a MOMENT think that Eponine deserves happiness over Cosette. She’d NEVER for a MOMENT wish Eponine was her daughter over Cosette, and if BOTH were her daughters? I think she’d be proud of them both equally.
ARGH.
